Biography | |
Born in Delhi, artist and designer Amitava was raised in Shimla and studied drawing and painting at College of Art, New Delhi.
In 1969, when he was a student he had his first show of paintings at Kunika-Chemould Gallery, then a leading gallery in the capital. Since then Amitava has participated in several exhibitions in India and abroad. His work is in the permanent collection of Society of Contemporary Art, London, National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, Punjab Museum, Chandigarh, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi and many private collections. In 1977 he created a tapestry mural for Indian Trade Exhibition in Moscow.
Amitava has designed publications, exhibitions, interiors, furniture and created trade fair graphics. He has been profiled in A Painters Portrait a film by K. Bikram Singh for Doordarshan and other numerous television programmes. In print he has been featured in the Times of India, The Statesman, Navbharat Times, Hindustan, Desh, The Indian Express, The Economic Times, Business Standard, Business Today, The Hindu, The Pioneer, The Hindustan Times, Art and Asia Pacific, Discover India etc.
Amitava has co-curated a Contemporary Indian Art show titled The Yellow Deity for the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and Museum of Contemporary Art/Ludwig Museum, Budapest, Hungary. |
