Biography | |
Painting has been the major interest in Anthony Watkins life since the age of four. He grew up on his grandfathers farm in north central Virginia and his first paintings were rural scenes populated with the animals, trees and farm buildings he knew best. An avid reader, he later made drawings based on stories by Mark Twain and Charles Dickens and on histories of the revolutionary and civil wars.
Watkins moved to California 1973 and enrolled two years later in the studio-school of the Los Angeles-based realist painter Lawrence Gluck. By following Glucks course of study, which was based upon that of the great French and German ateliers of the 19th century, Watkins learned to see and accurately transcribe the shapes, textures, and colors found within a given subject, whether still life or portrait, through direct observation and naturalistic drawing.
In 1979 he went to Paris and made an independent study of classical painting techniques while enrolled at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He also did further study on classical realist techniques while examining the academic realist works in the Louvre and other collections throughout France. |
