Biography
Charles William Bartlett, born in 1860 in Dorestshire, England, first became a chemist for some years but then found his true passion as he studied at the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts in London and the Academie Julian in Paris. Well established as an artist by his fifties, he took an extended tour through Asia, where he visited the Watanabe Printshop and became captivated by the ancient Japanese woodblock technique.

Wanting to break up the long ocean voyage on his return home to England, he decided to make a stopover in Honolulu, and thus began an exciting new phase of his life. Bartlett hadn't counted on the natural beauty of Hawaii and the charms of its people, so although he originally intended to stay only a few weeks, he became enchanted with the island paradise and decided to make it his new home. He quickly settled in to his tropical way of life, and in 1933, he founded Honolulu Printmakers, an organization that continues today.

Charles Bartlett was perhaps the most celebrated island artist of his time, becoming the darling of Hawaii's high-society crowd, where he and his wife were fixtures on the social circuit. In addition to doing portraits of that well-heeled group, he was among a handful of Western artists whose mastery of the Japanese woodblock print tradition brought about a modern revival of that ancient art form. His woodblock prints were very popular and sold from $15 to $30 per print in a time when $15 was equivalent to a week's salary.

Bartlett died in 1940, leaving a rich legacy of artwork documenting Hawaiian scenery and life in the first half of the 20th century.
