Biography
Dana Levin is an established Classical Realism painter and works in a range of genres including figurative, still life and portraiture. Levin says about her work: "Painting from nature is about the discovery of truth; discovering beauty, discovering humanity. It explores our existence by giving body to ideas, through the undeceiving physicality of its subjects. I search for balance between drawing, light and composition, and the emotional significance of the subject, to create an image that offers an immediate visual impression, which slowly, over time, unfolds on levels deeper than the surface of the canvas." After graduating from The Art Institute of Chicago in 1990, Dana learned the Academic Painting techniques of the European masters at the Florence Academy of Art. She completed the rigorous three-year Florence Academy of Art curriculum and upon graduation was asked to join the school's drawing and painting faculty for the next five years. Ms. Levin is part of a Classical Realism lineage that connects her as an artist and teacher to Jean-Leon Gerome, The Boston School Painters, Tarbel, Paxton and Benson, Ives Gammel, Richard Lack, and her own maestro, Daniel Graves. Dana Levin is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including: Whos Who in American Art, American Artists Professional League- Ridgewood Art Association Award, 24th Annual Artist Magazine -First Place Portrait Category, Katharine A. Lovell Memorial Award, and Art Renewal Center- Living Artist Honor. Dana is a member of :The Oil Painters of America, The International Society of Realist Painters, and the International Guild of Realism.
