Biography | |
David Baron is a young contemporary artist, born in 1972 in Brittanny (France), where he grew up by the Atlantic Ocean.
He paints in the manner of the old masters and his paintings have earned him a reputation for excellence. He begins to be known in France as a fine marine painter in oil and watercolor (he specialized in nautical scenes, as for example portrait of classic yachts...), but his paintings of landscapes and architectural scenes are also very appreciated.
His studio is based in Brassempouy (Aquitaine, France), where he lives with his wife and their son. He has been selling his work at live exhibitions around France (also Spain, Switzerland, etc.) and begins to do it around the world via an ebay store and now via gellery-worlwide.com!
After studying chemistry (he majored and graduated in chemistry and chemical engineeering in 1995), Baron moved to Landes (France) to devote full-time to painting in 1998: actually, it was his real passion for he drew since he was very young!
His other passion is ocean and yachting: how could it be different for a Breton? Fascinated by the ocean lights and colors, the moods of the sea and the changing skies, David Baron naturally specialized in the marine paintings, domain in which he excels by the precision of his drawing lines: his interest in marine paintings grew up with his passion for sea and yachting. First as a simple observer (his grand-father was solderer and worked on famous liners, as the "France"), then as an actor (he went sailing with his father since his youngest age), he became artist: little by little, as self-taught, he learned to paint in the manner of the old masters, rediscovering the incredible Van Eyck technique.
His nautical experiences have given him a personal knowledge of the effects of wind, sea and light on a variety of sailing vessels. His paintings of classic racing yachts clearly convey the feeling of their power and grace. Experience, perspective, and love-of-subject set his work apart in a field rich in tradition. His painted ships aren't idle, they seem to fly on canvas (or wood pannels). Famous racing yachts are portrayed during epic moments from the history of the greatest yacht races in the world, like the America's Cup.
Not content, Baron went on to become an organizer of art exhibition during four years, and he's also teacher in two art schools he founded, with the major focus to revive the Van Eyck technique. His technical knowledge also led him to take part in artistical panel of judges and even to restore antique artworks. And as he's interested in environmental problems (many concerning oceans), he's a member of the FNH (Nicolas Hulot Foundation for Nature and Man).
Inspiration always comes to Baron from sea, and his credo is always the same: relate the sea and its heroes, yesterday and today, with colors, lights, relief... Every original artwork exhibited by Baron is then the expression, testimony or reflection of a precise moment, way of life or page from the nautical history: harbor scenes, sailing ships, element of a boat, sailor's gesture or free creation coming from his imagination... An finally, his artworks are always heartfelt.
Baron creates pictures in his personal way: photographer by pleasure, chemist by training, drawer above all, he pulled of these different aspects an original state of mind: his training enriches his painting technique, leading him to wonder about interactions between the products he uses and preservation of artworks, whereas photography improves his artistical imagination, giving him taste for structure, concern for detail and fascination for light effects and transparency.
In watercolour and oil, he found an ideal way of expression to translate natural surroundings, atmospheric elements or dynamical nautical scenes, and the rare luminosity of his work is mainly the result of a painstaking technique practiced by Van Eyck (and later by some of the XIXth century masters of marine art) that he rediscovered by himself. Applying layers of thin translucent glazings, he carefully blends the colors with deft strokes, and details are layed on very cleverly... But his work is most of all notable for his height: most of his paintings are small formats, which forces the artist to be very accurate. You just have to view the result: the artworks speak for themselves! |
