Born Northampton 1990.
Through the medium of painting I aim to create an art of spontaneity, sensuality and style. I am intrigued to explore and push the boundaries of contemporary abstract painting, through the expressive act of making and application of material. Movement and energy have been important elements of my work, this has been regularly achieved by an obsessive act of mark making and interaction of colour and form. This approach has become an engagement with painterly qualities through a physicality and exploration of material, often using a combination of oil and acrylic paints, as well as household. The process has been central to me, trying to achieve an image that is pushed beyond its boundaries. Although there is a great degree of control in my work, I am fascinated to explore the element of chance that can occur. An element of serendipity becomes present within this process which is an exciting prospect, where a spur of the moment act can in turn change the whole dynamics of the composition leading the piece into a new direction.
I have enjoyed playing with elements of perspective, fluctuating between depth and flatness of the surface- colour being vital towards creating the illusionistic space, often expanding the form or gesture of composition onto the wall surface. This proposes an element of objectivity, where the painting becomes part of its architecture. In turn exploring a decorative attempt towards creating stylistic qualities, that have an architectural structure to their form. My interest in modern architecture has enabled me to gain a greater sense of composition and shape, regularly taking inspiration from the structural elements in my surroundings and incorporating these into my paintings. |
