Biography | |
Doug Rugh, spent his childhood in the Middle East as the son of a U.S. foreign service officer. As a teenager he apprenticed to artisans in Cairo, Egypt, and was involved with the arts at the Putney School in Vermont. Mr. Rugh attended the Maryland Institute College of Art before studying with Will Wilson and Anne Schuler at the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore, an atelier that specializes in materials and methods of the old masters. He worked as a scientific illustrator at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, where both of his grandfathers did scientific research. He completed his BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design with honors.
Since then Mr. Rugh has created original works of art for such clients as Barnes and Noble, Fine Homebuilding, Microsoft, The New York Times, Readers Digest, Newsweek, and The Washington Post. Commissioned work has appeared regularly in print, on book and magazine covers as well as in numerous publications.
Mr. Rugh now devotes his time to creating fine art for galleries but also accepts portrait commissions. He makes a special effort to research the various artists paints and processes available to artists and hand-mulls his paints daily. Due to the time consuming methods involved in creating the artwork only a limited numbers of works are available each year. The artists professional affiliations include Oil Painters of America, Classical Realism Society, American Society of Portrait Artists, Portrait Society of America, and the Copley Society of Art with the distinction of Copley Master. |
