Biography | |
I studied for 5 years in Atelier Ayfer Karamani, a renown Turkish sculptor and then opened my own atelier. My master, Ayfer Karamani, knew exactly how to teach to a stubborn rebel the ceramics and sculpting techniques without interfering with the âÂÂcrazy spiritâ (This comment belongs to some critics, however I prefer to accept it as a compliment). Throughout the years I joined several Karamani workshop exhibitions, had joint and solo exhibitions, created large scale mural ceramics for various bank entrances, bars and restaurants.
Usually I feel an intense emotional attachment to my subject, and work on it doggedly until I complete my full expression of the subject. That's why I work mostly in collections. I have worked on a variety of themes including the Aegean coast, prehistorical Anatolian, Greek and Roman art. Being born in Turkey, I have a natural interest in prehistorical art of Anatolia, Trojans, Hittite, and Sumer.
Extensive travels to exotic locations including Africa, South America, Far East, Near East and Europe have inspired many of my favorite works. As I travel, I am constatnly trying to capture the local colors and the stories behind the different cultures.
My works are exclusively 'hand made'. I don't work with a potters wheel and I avoid painting with brushes as much as possible. I love creating with my hands, stroking over the form and giving it âÂÂlifeâ rather than âÂÂpaintingâ it. This process is very important to me, it's how I transform emotions to sculpture. |
