| Biography | |
Free is a dynamic mixed media artist whose work embraces both traditional and new media. Consciously creative and drawn to explore multiple artistic media at an early age, Free began studying advertising, photography, and painting at the age of ten, when she asked her parents to enroll her in the prestigious childrenâs art program at Asphalt Green. This early interest in art and photography led Free to enroll in New York Cityâs High School of Art and Design, where she specialized in advertising and art direction. Trained as a digital artist and commercial designer, Free honed her skills in logo and campaign design and storyboard development, and went on to receive the schoolâs Silver Medal in marketing for her work with Art & Designâs school-based advertising firm.
Her love of art and versatility as a commercial artist coupled with her growing interest in the changes affecting her surrounding community has stimulated Freeâs growth in a new direction. Reared in New York Cityâs Spanish Harlem, Free draws inspiration from the colorful traditions and captivating histories of local communities. Her passion for raising social awareness led Free to collaborate closely with local leaders and non-profit agencies to develop logos and design campaigns for the East Harlem Asthma Working Group, and New York Cityâs First Asthma Awareness March.
Along with her passion for raising awareness within the community Free enjoys applying her design skills to projects that reflect some of her personal lifestyle choices. As a vegetarian and advocate of animal rights and eco-consciousness, Free hopes to use her artistic talents and aptitude for art direction in the spirit of this vision. Most recently, she developed a design for Yi-ya Natural, a local vegetarian and vegan catering service dedicated to exploring healthy meatless alternatives to traditional Latino cuisine. She is currently designing a marketing plan for the company.
Freeâs creative inclinations and artistic vision extend far beyond her work as a commercial designer. Compelled by her need to explore other mediums and further cultivate her love for painting, Free has continued to paint and create multi-media installations shaped and inspired by Caribbean politics, womenâs health, and inter-galactic cosmic mysteries. Her curiosity, drive, and creative shape shifting have provoked the interest of local venues, artists and art connoisseurs, including renowned public art provocateur and sidewalk art maven James De La Vega, whom invited Free to participate in her first public exhibition at an open air gallery in East Harlem. Since then Crystal has showcased her in various venues including local cafés, the Julia De Burgos Cultural Center, and the Office of New York State Senator Jose Serrano.
Her love for fashion and urban style have inspired her latest creative concoctions, include innovative handbag designs which incorporate recycled clothing and other fashionista waste. She is also at work on her first line of oversized, urban folk-inspired jewelry designs. Free is currently working toward a B.A in Art Education at Pratt Institute. |
