Since I can remember Ive always viewed the world around me in an abstract way. Everyday words and images would somehow be transformed and tailored to my imagination. I remember at the age of 4, in infant school, the class were asked to all contribute to a mural, trees and blue sky etc, and where I painted some sky and clouds in a certain way my teacher became angry that I hadn't painted it his way and made me hold my hand out while he hit it repeatedly with a ruler. From then on Id paint in secret. my feelings and artistic expression became hidden, internalized. Only some years later did I develop the confidence to show my art, but long before that it has always been a great friend to me, a place where I can lose myself. I'm 41 now and have painted commercially on occasions in order to subsidize for the materials I'd need to paint the stuff I wanted to. At the age of 24 I spent 2 years studying for a fine art and art history diploma through the London guildhall (not at), and also completed a degree in psychology. For me the 2 subjects certainly complement each other. Ive had many requests for reproductions of my personal artwork, but have yet to take any steps in that direction. |
