When I was a child, my family moved to Paris. We had been living in Sunnyvale CA when it was still farm land. Living in Paris gave me with a new perspective on the world, people and art. I always made art but didnt call it that. Making beautiful objects came naturally to me. It allowed me to give a piece of myself when offering objects as gifts. As a teen I haunted the Louvre, Jeu de Paume, and Versailles. Summers were spent in different regions of France absorbing history. Museums gave me a sense of how durable important work can be. It can be felt for centuries. When I was 15 we moved to Sao Paulo. Culture shock set in. The Brazilians have a rich culture but very different from France. I learned new things like macumba and Carnivale, admiring all the colorful effigies. At 17 I went to the US for school. Once again, culture shock. My first years at CCAC were spent exploring different media. I met Viola Frey and Art Nelson and my life changed. At first I was unhappy, my early work reflects this. In 1982 I decided to make art that would be full of life and happiness. I needed my work to be bright and colorful: a patchwork of patterns, shapes and textures. Ive always been in love with sculpture and painting and wanted to fuse them in my own work. I want my work to have presence that fills space on par with the viewer. It should be durable and last forever like beautiful objects of the past. For these reasons I chose to work in clay. My work is a life size free-standing sculptural whole. Once I fire the work the bone-white form becomes my canvas. The forms I build are then painted in glaze. My paintings wrap around the work taking the viewer on a journey across brightly colored and textured surfaces. I like working with the human figure. The figure commands respect and space in a room. The viewer has a natural empathy for the form. I love the historical connection I feel working in an ancient art form and media. I feel a connection with artists across time and culture. |
