Biography | |
Born in a taxicab in Brooklyn Nelson became interested in art when his family moved near Central Park in Manhattan. Crediting his easy access to great art and museums in New York City Nelson recalled I said I wanted to be an artist when I was 5 years old and got an oil painting set for my 7th birthday.
At age 18 he worked at a fish factory-shucking oysters for a year before beginning serious studies at the Art Students League of New York with internationally recognized classical drawing teacher and author Robert Beverly Hale. On the strength of figure drawing he earned a scholarship to the Southampton branch of the State University of New York, gaining a more formal education in fine arts.
A healthy portfolio has allowed him to work with notable and creative artists including modern iron sculptor Robert Roesch, painter Leroy Neiman and bronze artists Steve and Stewart Wegner.
I enjoy just playing with paint. I have enough education to make my paintings look like things we see, at the same time Im having fun breaking a picture plane into areas of bright color. Blue skies, yellow fields, green grass, red and purple flowers, and orange sunsets. Paintings as colorful as a bag of M&Ms. |
