Biography | |
I graduated with an architecture degree at Kansas University in 1983. After working as an architect for 8 years I became disenchanted and started instead to paint as a creative outlet. Being unemployed when I first started painting I had a simple rule that each painting had to be completed in one day. That allowed me to work on various ways of painting and discover the thrill of applying paint on various surfaces, anything I had around the house. Often not having an end product in mind when starting a painting I became a process painter. That is, while I may have only the vagueist of ideas for an end product I know how I am going to get what I want through the processes that are chosen to get there. I have never recieved any art training of any sort, only training in architecture. All of my techniques are self taught over the last 18 years.
I have never needed any money from painting, so I have never tried to sell of my paintings. I gave them away and ussually after having my two annual parties I would sell a couple of pieces to friends, very cheaply. I have always made paintings for me about me, if someone else liked them, good, I'm glad. If not, so what. As it turns out, abstract art is open to many interpretations by the observer and people were relating to paintings in ways that I certainly did not expect from my work. That was a thrill that became addictive. The pricing of my art varies tremendously because I sell according to whether I have room in my house, is it a part of a set up in a room, and especially how much I like it. In fact I will not sell some of my paintings because I want them for myself. My only criteria for the pricing of a painting is how much money I would need to have in order for me to feel alright about not having that painting.
I currently live in middle Georgia in a somewhat isolated way. I know no other artist in this area nor have I sought them out. I have worked in this isolated way for the last 4 years. In that time I have been moving towards more textured pieces that at times were on multi-layered strutures. The textures have grown to be deeper and deeper, now they are up to an inch deep. I love layering the colors on the textures in order to bring out the texture. more and more my paintings have become a representation of my spiritual self. Life is a struggle between the spiritual self and the structures imposed by society. The free flowing portions of my painting represent the spirit and the gridded structures represent the structures of society. Please enjoy the paintings and feel free to comment, it has been a while since I have received any feedback. |
