We live in highly entropic times and Robert Reece's artwork tries to capture that chaotic notion on his canvases. His angular shapes suggest a fractal geometry that may be giving a consistent order to events, while the organic strokes contradict that conceit altogether. His paintings are emblematic of the choices and random incidents that shape our lives into a portrait of harmonious violence. How much entropy, how much chaos is in each of our lives wasting energy? Art critic Sandra Shrader said of Reeces paintings, he brushes his thoughts into looping, muscular matter, layering it all into dense, shimmering strata. His emotions glide enthusiastically through each complex and intricate piece.
Although his work is very much his own style, Robert was influenced by Frankenthaler, Motherwell, Feininger, and Pollack as well as being rooted in cubism and graffiti. Leading to his explorations on canvas, Robert was always immersed in art. Some of his earliest memories are of his mother, an award-winning watercolorist, teaching painting classes in their home when he was a child. Her college textbooks on Art History, Color Theory, and Perspective would turn out to be Robert's primary education in art. His parents were also avid art collectors, which led them to eventually open their own gallery. At the gallery, Robert was exposed to a wide range of contemporary work. Not only did Robert learn the practical business aspects of operating a gallery, he helped design ads as well as curate exhibits. Robert went on to receive degrees in Visual Communication and Cinema Studies. From there, he worked as a photographer in Milan, Vienna, and Los Angeles, developing a visual language that would make its way into his paintings. Robert Reece currently lives in Southern California with his wife and their twins. |
