Biography
I drew and painted from early childhood until this day, inspired by my father and mother who were both artisans in their own right. One of my earliest memories is drawing trees, animals and people on the farm in W.Va. where I grew up and from pictures although presently I work form photograps from my travels and outdoor sketching of local scenes in rural Pa. Studying art from books, other artists, observing their work in galleries have a function in your development to maturity as an artist.
However, the best learning is from experience driven by a sense of wonder and curiosity and the urge to create which I believe in my case was inherent at birth which explains the burning desire I have always had to express the deeper underlying essence of life.
Art is a form of communication and language that artists use to express ideas and feelings that everyday words cannot express which goes beyond describing and telling. In order to understand the meaning of a work of art you must not only see it with your eyes but to experience art you must develop the ability to perceive. To perceive is to become deeplu aware through the senses of the special nature of a visual object. To understand and receive communication from a work of art you must train yourself to perceive and like music it crosses all language barriers. Therefore, artists must exhibit courage to take risks able to express their surroundings in new and usual ways, willing to work intensely for long periods of time to achieve a goal and develop their own skills , techniques and unique style. To live with sensitivity awareness and responsibility in an age of uncertainty, violence and overstimulation requires courage. Creativity is anecessary part of being human and artists are ones who have learned to tap into their creativity more than others. I made a two hour documentarry entitled For the Love of Life on creativty as well as my development as apainter which expresses the purposes of art, the 8 elements of design, 8 principles of of composition. The style which seems to dominate my work is one I call lyrical realism which to me best interprets life and nature in all their beauty and uncertainty and imparts the spiritual dimension of art. I have entered many art exhibitions here in Pa and have many ribbons of fisrt, second and third place in many shows.
