Criner was selected as one of todays great Southern Artists by the Oxford American Magazine, in the November 2005 issue. In addition, his work is included in many highly respected private collections, including the collection of Lewis Tanner Moore, great-nephew of renowned American artist Henry O. Tanner.
Born in rural East Texas, Criner draws upon his roots and his facinating personal history to create his ouvre. Criner studied Art at Texas Southern University under acclaimed African-American artist John Biggers, and become one of Biggers great protegés.
Criner served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era and published a weekly comic strip for the Army as a part of his military service. Criner is also one of the artists who worked for NASA in 1969 and was responsible for drawing some of the original flight plans for NASAs famous Apollo 11 mission to the moon.
