Biography | |
Wales is one of the oldest geological places on Earth. Taking this into account its natural that Jamie Jones gets his inspiration from his immediate surroundings, that of Swansea, West Wales valleys and the Gower which is a source of endless subject matter.
Jamie works from his studio in Swansea, taking full advantage of the special light this south-facing city on the coast has to offer.
Human habitation upon the landscape drastically changes it, theres beauty in the way the houses cling to the contour lines of the land, as if they were limpets stuck to a rock. The buildings become a flowing pattern and have a rhythm to them when viewed from above or afar. Individual they are in their own right, but a line of terraced houses can become a form, snaking its way across the landscape.
Strong colours and textures of brushwork express the impact of light and depth of shadow; Jamie works with a variety of mediums oil paint, acrylics, watercolours and oil pastel. His work is said to sit between representational and semi-abstract. Jamie is always pushing the boundaries on his work and is constantly expanding his knowledge.
It is the play of light and shadow that allows us to perceived an objects shape and size. For Jamie, light is more than a visual tool, it is an emotional subject. It is though manipulation of light how it falls, changes, sculpts, colours and creates various moods on a subject that intrigues and inspires the artist. |
