Biography | |
Chris Follows born 70(s) in the West Midlands UK. The work of Chris Follows has a manufactured yet unique appearance, public and private boundaries are explored and repetition and restraint are a fundamental part of his practice.
Painting: Chris has developed a unique style of painting produced through a repetitive application and removal of acrylic paint onto aluminium mesh. Chris is in some way removed from the creative act of painting, he only views the results of his labour once the paint is dry and the painting is turned over. The imagery for Chriss paintings resonate a sense of loss and irreplaceable time. Paintings have been exhibited widely, Paintings in corporate and private collections include: R. Kaller-Kimche Inc New York, D Jones and J Morris Directors of the Business Design Centre and The Professional Football Association (PFA) in Manchester.
Chris is currently exploring the Internet as a creative platform and resource for video/web based artwork.
The internet is already a democratic broadcasting space for everyone and many sites allow you to upload your personal digital footage from mobile phones and DV cameras. Video artist have yet to colonise the Internet as a viable equivalent or alternative to conventional gallery video art/installation. The unique framework and spectatorship of the internet provides an exciting and uncultivated opportunity for all video artist to explore.
I am interested in the culture of random Internet video users who upload their personal home digital footage on to a public platform. I see video sites like You Tube as a creative resource for found footage various home videos are captured from random Internet sites, I store and reworked found footage into new video narratives or loops. The final result can include over twenty separate pieces of footage edited or composited together to produce a video montage that is redistributed onto the video sites where they first originated; the videos are also converted to DVD and shown in a gallery environment. I like the possibility that the original owners will come across a section of their own footage re-contextualised. I also find interesting the speed in which the process can manifest itself, somebody can upload their video and within days it can be captured and reworked and shown in a gallery or online.
Community Arts Commissions and Residencies: Arts Council commissioned residency in Golborne W10, www.golborne.org a visual record of time spent in the Golborne area (2003/4). The Arts Cruise, digital/film collaboration Paddington basin (2004). A yearlong residency at AIT, a software developer based in Henley Chris also assisted artist Richard Layzell on a major public art project in the centre of Maidenhead (2001). |
