Biography | |
I feel that my current painting style coincides with the surrealist-expressionist traditions of the early 20th century, integrated with my own flavor. I use abstract shapes and unorthodox bright color combinations to achieve this. They portray a whimsical, playful quality. This jumble of dreamlike, spontaneously morphic shapes and imagery dance and stimulate the senses.
I was born and raised in Springfield, Ohio. I spent a lot of my younger years creating, drawing and imitating comic books and cartoon characters. My parents encouraged my early passion for art by having me attend the local art center for primary drawing classes. I continued to create throughout my intermediate and high school years further influenced by enthusiastic art class teachers.
Fueled by this positive reinforcement, I entered contests and did small illustration jobs locally, all while honing my skills and studying the great masters of art. Wanting to learn art on a professional level, I applied and was later accepted on scholarship at the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio.
At the college, I explored many areas within the design and studio arts disciplines. I learned how to apply his artwork in many different areas throughout advertising, graphics, and fine art forms. I graduated from the college with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Retail Advertising Design.
My stylistic influences include the great masters such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro and Romare Beardon, as well as African Ndebele and Basotho cultural influences, Japanese art and African-American art. |
