Statement

For me, an artist’s work is a continuous journey, forever changing and evolving while they, as a person, grow and develop too.

The main focus of research and source of inspiration for me has always been nature.
I believe a painting reflects nature in its creation, inheriting characteristics from the last, becoming part of a process, which never begins or ends. Ý have become obsessed with nature’s structural diversity and will continue to explore the conflicting ideas about the infinity and chaos within it, alongside the patterns and repetition theories. My theoretical research so far has found that we are just beginning to understand the implications of quantum mechanics in nature and that our old scientific laws were all limited in that they was concerned with closed systems where everything had a predictable cause and effect.

My work, however, is far from a direct representation of the natural world. I paint by selecting elements from nature and transform and manipulate them, forging them with my imagination into a world very much my own, at once familiar and yet wholly foreign. Strange formations appear to mutate, grow and interact across my canvases and which have been likened to the worlds of Roberto Matta, Max Ernst, Takashi Murakami and Inka Essenhigh.
The underwater world has always held an incredible fascination for me and from which I naturally take an extremely strong influence. The entire submarine ecosystem has so much to offer that even the most sterile imagination cannot help but be profoundly effected by it; for a lively and vibrant imagination it is a goldmine of creative stimuli. Many different habitats exist in the aquatic realm, some species range over a number of very different habitats while many have evolved to suit very specific ones. The forms, structures and colours that can be found and from which I take so much inspiration differ so greatly from anything on land as to appear entirely alien to our imagination. Creatures of exceptional beauty can be found happily alongside the grotesque and indeed these two apparently irreconcilable ideas can often be seen in the same specimen. I think much of my work struggles to resolve this conflict which can lead to a sometimes beautiful, sometimes unsettling, but always interesting aesthetic vision. I feel my work also reflects the underwater space itself. While on land things fight such constraints as gravity, in the ocean, life can go in any direction in an essentially weightless environment. This is the way I see my canvasses - a liquid space, a free space, with no gravitational restraints and the resultant surprises this can allow.
