Judy Metcalfe received a B.F.A. degree in Fine Art from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Judy is a masterful watercolorist who paints florals and still lifes from life. She aspires to constantly challenge herself as an artist, which is apparent in her exceptional technical ability. She often paints large… larger than life! Although her work is naturalistic, she enjoys the abstractness of the intricate patterns she sees in realistic things i.e. glass vases, china, fabrics, and flowers. It is the brilliant handling of their reflections, designs, folds, and shadows that have earned her many prestigious awards and professional memberships.
Watercolor has been her preferred medium since 1977 when she moved from Virginia to Cape Anne. Although she occasionally paints local landscapes, she has found that still life subjects give her the greatest range of creativity.
Judy is a Signature member of The American Watercolor Society and the New England Watercolor Society. She is a juried artist member of the North Shore Arts Association and Academic Artists Association. She has won numerous awards in National and International exhibitions and has exhibited work at the Salmagundi Club and the National Arts Club in New York City, the Philadelphia Watercolor Society and the Hudson Valley Art Association.
Her work has appeared in Watercolor magazine and American Artist Magazine and several watercolor books including: Splash 11: New Directions, The Artistic Touch, Volume 4, and Best of America Watermedia Artists.
