Biography | |
The Ink paintings I create of crashing waves, drifting rivers, backfires, undertows and storms each carry the notion of a force much greater than myself. I want to be in that wave, under the water-not safely on shore looking out at the horizon but standing in a motion that can be either fast or slow.
To get inside this motion I create a wave physically larger than me by using an excess of water and ink. It is the renegade surfer whose relationship with skill, the possibility of death and the exhilaration of being alive I am interested in. To quote the legendary pro surfer Greg Noll who is a pioneer of big wave surfing in Hawaii "I took off on a wave, went down the side, popped out the other end, and went, shit, I'm still alive!"
Taking risks on paper and not knowing where it will lead, but trusting in my skill to figure a way out is the challenge.
Surfers are completely committed to what they do. They fall down and paddle back out again and again. Surfer Gary Sirota says âÂÂUnlike anything else in life, the stoke of surfing is so high that the failures quickly fade from memoryâÂÂ.
I travel into unchartered territory in painting for the possible âÂÂstokeâÂÂ. I test my ability to create structure in a mass of moving water by answering to the laws of color and the âÂÂrectangleâÂÂ. I put myself in a dangerous situation and see if I have the skills to turn it into something beautiful. |
