Michel F. Marchand is a multidisciplinary artist. His works in various media are exhibited since 1975. In his large-scale sculptures, he often uses very uncommon materials. during the eighties, he was active mainly in installation and performance art. But right from the beginning of his work three decades ago, drawing has been his medium of choice, the means of expression he always comes back to in order to observe, to think and to imagine. His large-scale charcoal drawings can be found in many American collections.
The human body is always the starting point for him. He works with live models, both men and women. For a number of years now, he has been fascinated by the manyfold reveries on the body put forward in contemporary dance. The first lines in the drawing are always sparked off by the dancer who models for him, by the way she or he speaks, moves, by a strain or tension furtively revealed. Charcoal allows for great speed in execution: once triggered, the gestual work, the act of drawing, can become frantic. Marchand is interested here, as is the case in his sculpture work, in the constant movement and transformation of shapes. Drawn in actual scale, or larger than life, the naked body of the dancer moves and shifts, divides in two or three, becomes entangled with itself, disappears to reappear in a different form or light. These unusual representations of the body are obviously not erotic, their interest lies elsewhere.
In his most recent drawings, Marchand moves closer to the language of painting, even tough he still uses in his subject by trying to catch sight of the basic thruth of the body moving before him.
