Indian heritage is seeped in rich and vibrant history of arts, which are as relevant to this day as they have ever been. Every Indian's psyche has its roots firmly buried in the fertile soil of tradition and custom. And art has always been the mainstay of it.
The purpose of any art form, generally speaking, is to get across a universal message, which, curiously enough, is also the purpose to be individually identified with by anyone who appreciates or patronises it. Such was the motive of both artists and the expectation of patrons and connoisseurs of old who chiefly constituted emperors or the rich. This sustaining symbiotic relationship also became a powerful medium of expression between cultures and influenced many realms of society- from education to religion to even trade and across continents. This is existent, if more implicitly, even today.
Suresh Lokre's art captures the essence of this premise by sometimes directly implying the import of his expression with palpable, concrete facets, and other times by subtly interpreting a theme by varying shades of the same color.
The overall natural, elemental feel of his oeuvre is hard to miss. He almost entirely relies on the earthiness of his expression by smoothly juxtaposing it with a deeper philosophical or spiritual import. An underlining thematic approach that he adopted has been to soften the effect by gradually segueing from one shade to a lighter or deeper next, as a way of delineating the core spiritual meaning of each piece of his art work. This he has been able to accomplish and deliver remarkably well by the use of striking ethnic hues such as the concentric layers of vivid orange or intense midnight blue- which also make the piece de resistance of his works.
Though technically his style may be abstract, there is, remarkably, a great deal of clarity in his expression so that it is easy for even a lay person to relate to it. They almost speak to you! This fact is something that unambiguously shines through his works of art- with the delicate simplicity on the outside and a profound metaphysical meaning at the center. |
