Biography | |
Tom Phillips was born in 1951 in the county of Essex and attended Trinity Road and Moulsham Secondary school until the age of 15. Upon leaving school he had various labouring jobs until he joined the British Army, aged 18, and served for a period of six years. On his return to civilian life he decided to put the skills he had gained to good use and applied for a position with the Essex Ambulance Service with which he stayed with for 14 years.
Unfortunately then his marriage hit the rocks, he lost everything; his house, his money, and most dear to him, his children. During this bleak time he ended up serving a short spell in prison giving him time for thought and reflection and where he developed a fascination for rustic art.
This was how the first seedlings of his future were born, creating art out of the natural world of nature, without destroying any living thing. All of the branches that Tom uses in his art are the remains of clearance projects and are not altered in any way. The whole ethos is to use what is available to you without taking anything from the environment. Every element of each piece takes into consideration the impact our surroundings and therefore Tom Phillips will only ever use re-cycled products to enhance his art. |
