Biography
Victor Agius was born in Victoria Gozo, in 1982. He is son of Maria and Mario Agius, who is a wood sculptor and teacher, to whom Agius owes his first engagement to art. Being surrounded by an artistic atmosphere since his early childhood, Agius always manifested great interest in paintings, sculpture and ‘pasturi’ and spent most of his time in his father’s workshop. At the age of seven be began to attend private classes under artist Anthony Caruana.

Since then, he never stopped performing his artistic expressions and attended the Gozo School of Arts in the early 1990s. In 1993 he began to be instructed by the Maltese artist Mr. Harry Alden and still today Mr. Alden is Agius’s main master. He studied art for two years at an Advanced level at the Sir M.A. Refalo Centre for further Studies under Mr. Cassar. In 2000 he enrolled in the B.Educ (Hons.) course in the University of Malta specialising in Art and Physical Education. He successfully completed the course and graduated in November 2004 and is today a full time teacher in Malta. Recently he also concluded a ceramics course followed at the MCAST under the tuition of Mr George Muscat and is engaged in figure drawing under the instruction of Mr Anton Calleja.

During his University years his artistic perspective was influenced by many tutors and lecturers amongst whom there are; Dr Joseph Paul Casssar, Mr Joe Casha, Mr Lino Borg, Rev. Gino Gauci, Mr Raphael Vella and Mr Ceaser Attard. His dissertation, ‘The Maltese Presepju – Cultural and Educational Aspects’, focused on the artistic aspects of the nativity scene as a folkloristic art which enriches the Maltese identity. He is very active in cultural organisations, which work both locally and abroad, on folkloristic art such as the nativity scene.

In the last few years Agius was quite active taking part in various collective exhibitions, such as a photographic project which was exhibited at St. James Cavalier and also has sculptures exhibited in permanent museums in Rome and Pennsylvania. Moreover, in 2003-2004, he participated in art projects in Bergamo, Berlin and Naples. In October 2004, the young artist embarked on his first personal exhibition, named Gaulos, which he held in the Barumbara Art Café, Mgarr Hotel Gozo . In December 05 the artist held his second solo exhibition which was a manifesto of abstract panels and semi figurative ceramic sculptures portraying the events of the Nativity Story. This exhibition was very well received.

Presently Agius is immersed in a quest to find himself in his art by trying to express his fervent passion for art in expressionistic landscapes, sacred art and abstract art. His next exhibition will be in July 2006 at Cleland and Souchet, Portomaso, St Julians, Malta.
