Biography

Scott was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan and has made the state his home for most of his life.  Coming from a creative family, his artistic abilities came as no surprise.  His interest in art began at a young age, and his natural talent was apparent as he continually drew and sketched objects from his surroundings as well as his imagination.  He also built model tanks and airplanes, developing a high level of skill at a young age.  He was encouraged to further develop his skills and continue with his artwork, which was admired by all who viewed it, particularly his family and friends.

Scott was introduced to painting during middle school when he picked up his mother's brushes and oil paints.  He was intrigued by the creative possibilities presented by combining color and brush strokes to generate the appearance of texture, light and shadow.  This experience ignited a passion for manipulating the smooth, buttery paint on the painting surface.

The passion for painting remained with the artist through high school and into college.  He studied art at The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and Western Michigan University.  Scott then attended the University of Michigan, earning a B.A. in Political Science with the intention of becoming an attorney.  Scott studied Law briefly at Michigan State University and also pursued an M.B.A. in Finance at Wayne State University.

After his father was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer, Scott became involved with the family business.  While this kept him quite busy, he continued to work on his painting.  After a few years, the business was closed due to declining economic conditions in the Michigan paper industry.  Scott also worked as a Financial Advisor at Citizen's Bank and as a Financial Consultant at Morgan Stanley.  He and his wife also operated a retail cafe as well as a wholesale bakery for several years.  It was during this period in the early part of this decade that Scott decided to focus exclusively on his art.  Scott knew that he had been an artist his entire life, and that artwork was and always had been his one passion.  He now determined that he would spend the rest of his life pursuing that passion.

Scott's work typically involves a sentimental or emotional theme intended to evoke memories in the viewer, or transport the viewer to the emotional state of the artist.  These elements are utilized to varying degree depending upon the subject matter.  Landscapes and seascapes are particularly attractive, as the artist enjoys capturing the feeling or mood created as light and shadow interact with natural and man made elements.

Scott's style is largely impressionist, and he renders his work on a variety of substrates including stretched cotton and linen canvas, as well as linen, cotton and wood panels, and occasionally hand made art papers.
