Biography
Dean Lee Uhlinger (1954- )
Dean Lee is a fifth generation Californian, of Swiss ancestry. He began using his fathers camera at the age of 13. Thus began a love affair with the "click" as Dean so fondly refers. I grew up in Carlsbad California, in a beach town, north of San Diego, and that was a natural place for me to start, but I already had an affinity for the desert landscape that can be traced back, to watching old western movies, where the rugged
back drop of Monument Valley and other desert landscapes fascinated me as a youth. As soon as I could drive I began traveling the 90 miles, to the Anza Borrego desert. In time I traveled to the deserts and
regions of the Mojave, Sonoran, and the Colorado Plateau of Arizona
and Utah.

Dean Lee was published in 1994 (Desert Light, Chronicle Books) and
is currently finishing field work on "Precious Waters, River of Life"
a photo essay book on rivers of the west. He is a contributing photographer for Corbis Inc. (stock photography). Many of his standard landscape images are available through Corbis.
"My love of the southwest region of the U.S. and in particular the the art forms of native American cultures, led me in a parallel direction in creating abstract and surreal images that combine in a mixed media
style of photography and computer art; to capture all the natural,
visual elements of the region: colors, textures, shapes and designs.
I would have to say that my work is best described as fitting into the
category of art known as Santa Fe Style".

An art style developed in Europe in the 1920's, characterized by using the subconscious as a source of creativity to liberate pictorial subjects and ideas. Surrealist paintings often depict unexpected or irrational objects in an atmosphere of fantasy, creating a dreamlike scenario.
