Biography
Umberto Pettinicchio was born in Torremaggiore, Foggia, June 30th 1943. During his youth he carries out humble jobs until he is employed by a small decorating firm, an experience which was to awaken his first artistic passions. He approches painting from a self-taught base, till, after moving to Milan in 1959, he is finally able to freely follow his vocation. At the Scuola degli Artefici of the Brera Academy he studies under Gino Moro, who directs him towards a highly sophisticated technical mastering of the pictorial medium. Some time llater he begins his expository carrier at the Centro Culturale Isola, Milano. Throughout the following years he partecipates to group exhibitions and to awards, where his works distinguish themselves for their expressive iimpetuosness and for the obsessive anxiety which the author reveals in them. In 1976, finally, his first personal exhibitions, made ready in the atelier of via Paracelso, where he accomplishes his first mature works: amongst the former, the most conspicuous ones include his presence at the Nuova Sfera, Milano, 1973 (preceeded by an introduction by Carlo Munari), and 1977; at the Trittico, Roma, 1974; and at Il Castello, Milano, 1975 (with an introduction by Raffaele De Grada).
in 1976 he moves to a studio in via Bolzano placed at his disposal by Luigi Fossati, an undertaker and a lover of the arts who will act as his patron during many years, and whose steps will later be followed by his son Marco Fossati; this is the birthplace of the remarkable series of paintings of this period, which will underlie his definitive achievement, further enhanced by the coming out of an antological monography, with an introduction by Roberto Sanesi and papers by Vito Apuleio, Raffaele De Grada, Giancarlo Fusco, besides many others.
Pedro Fiore writes about him:" Pettinicchio is a gutsy one. A highly talented artist. One of the most original and meaningful painter of the new Italian Art". The course of the exhibitions acquires a far more regular cadence, with primary occasions at the Salotto, Como, 1980, at Il Castello, Milano, 1981, and at Il Mercante, Milano, 1982.
The beginning of the new decade brings new richness in the shape of significant Spanish experiences, the results of sojourns during which Pettinicchio is able to investigate, by means of a systematic study of ceramics, his sculptoral ability, which will reach a definite specification throughout the '80's. These include the exhibitions held at Sargadelos, Barcelona, 1982, at Piquio, Santander, 1982, at the VIII Madrid Biennal Exposition, 1982, at the Santander Town Museum, 1982, at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias, Oviedo, 1983, at the Avila Cultural Hall, 1983, and at Sargadelos, Madrid, 1983. These years also bring out the critical llectures held on his works by Javier Baron Thaidigsmann and Damaso Lopez Garcia. Towards the second half of the '80's Pettinicchio brings his definitive expressive evolution to maturity, where the dramatic leading character of the operation is played by the specific corporeity of matter and of the pictorial form. This further passage is fully measured in such exhibitions as "La Caduta del Corpo" (The Downfall of the Body), 1986 and "Sculture" (Sculptures), 1987, at the Radice in Lissone. In 1989 he moves to his current studio in Casatenovo, Brianza (a district to the North of Milan), in coincidence with a retrospective (exhibition) at the Spazio Harta in Campofiorenzo bearing the title "L'attraversamento del Corpo" (The Crossing of the Body).
