Biography

Mr. Stone’s plein aire work is acclaimed for generating brilliance and luminosity; a direct result he emphasizes, of how he is engaged by the effect of natural light on his subject.

Don Stone’s work is internationally recognized for his distinct American point of view. His choice of subject reflects his deeply rooted respect for the American tradition of realism as well as his personal history. Don has lived most of his eighty-one years on the New England coast, but it is his experience working on the wharfs in Gloucester and painting from a lobster boat on Monhegan Island, that evolved this modern impressionist painter into the master he is today.

Don is a graduate of the famed Vespar George School of art where he later became a faculty member. His mentor was Paul Strisik, NA (1918-1998), who developed his passion for plein aire painting and introduced him to some of the most important Cape Ann artists of the day, including renowned painters: Aldro Hibbard (1886—1972) and Emile Gruppe (1896-1978).

Don has lived his eighty-one years with content and success by being true to his personal philosophies which he often shares with other artists; in the artist's own words, “paint for yourself and to make yourself happy; don’t paint to sell; if you do a great painting it will sell; work hard, be devoted and believe in what you are doing; be honest and sincere in your painting; seek beauty in nature.”

Mr. Stone’s memberships are among the most prestigious professional associations in the country and are a testament to his vast achievements; they include: the National Academy of Design (Academician, N.A.), the American Watercolor Society (Dolphin Fellow), The American Society of Marine Artists (Fellow); Allied Artists of America, Copley Society of Boston (Copley Master), The Guild of Boston and others. His work is exhibited internationally and is part of the permanent collections of many museums, universities, and corporations.
