Description
Tsar Peter the Great loved ships and the sea, a passion which had great significance in the history and development of Russia. This intense interest began in the 1680's when he was a teenager and living in Moscow. He discovered a beautiful sailboat in a barn belonging to his uncle, Nikita Romanov. Historians are unsure whether this boat , called "botik" in Russian, had came from England or Holland. But evidently it had been a gift to Peter's grandfather in the 1640's, some forty years before Peter found it.

The botik was 6 meters (20 ft) long and equipped with a mast, sails and oars. Peter put it in nearby lakes and rivers and learned to sail. Remarkably, the botik is still in existence, having been carefully preserved all this years. It is now on display in the Central Naval Museum in St. Petersburg. It is affectionately called "The Grandfather of the Russian Navy".

In the 1980's the Shtandart Club wanted to construct a copy of the botik. Because of its history, and because it would be a manageable task, giving good work experience to those building it. The work actually began in 1993 in the USA. The keel and frames were made of pine by two young Russians at the Apprentice Shop in Nobleboro, Maine.

In 1994 these components were shipped to St. Petersburg and received by the Shtandart Club. Over a period of five years, this new botik was slowly and carefully built by workers and volunteers, as time permitted. It was officially launched in July, 1999, and will be used as the ship's boat of the frigate Shtandart as well as for display.
