Some biographical data on Jovan Arsenovic
Jovan Arsenovic was born in 1945 in Zemun, Serbia, where he also grew up. He was admitted to the Belgrade Academy of the Arts, where he completed his professional training as a sculptor in 1970.
He is a most versatile artist, who not only sculpts, but also paints, carves and makes mosaics. He works with a great variety of materials, among which wood, stone and bronze.
In 1971, Jovan Arsenovic joined the Yugoslav Circle of Artists. He has remained a member ever since.
In 1974 he had his first one-man exhibition in Belgrade. That same year he won the prize for sculpture in another exhibition named Prostor. This was also the time when he decided to go to Paris. Upon his arrival there he was introduced to the renowned French sculptor Coutel. In exchange for food and shelter, Jovan assisted Coutel for a while.
In May 1975 a friend invited him to come to the Netherlands. He settled in The Hague, where he started off professionally with an exhibition in the Tequila Art Gallery. This exhibition displayed a series of icons.
From 1976 to 1978 he followed a post-academic course at the Royal Academy for the Arts in The Hague. After years of hard work, he brought another one-man exhibition to Belgrade, at the Pinki Art Gallery.
In 1985 he was commissioned to make an art object for a Dutch primary school. For this purpose he created a tall pillar with animal images which rested on a turtle.
In 1986 he was awarded first prize for graphics at he New Hague Salon, a major annual event bringing together a large number of artist.
