Biography
Ginger (Lacki) Wankewycz, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, has been folding origami creations since the age of eight. It was during her college years that she also developed a keen interest in the art of printmaking. She now displays her expertise in both those artistic fields and sells her fine art prints and origami designs and jewelry in many art and craft shows in Northern Ohio.

Since Graduating from Baldwin-Wallace College (Berea, Ohio) with a degree in Fine Arts and Psychology in 2001, Ginger has been involved in many juried art exhibits, and a number of gallery shows (including a 3 person show at Pentagon Gallery in Mayfield, Ohio). She also volunteered as an Activities Chairperson for “Front & Center Berea Arts Fest” from 1999-2002, and served as Creative Consultant for the festival in 2003.

Since she often enjoys doing what others would consider to be “tedious” work, from folding the tiniest of origami cranes to spending hours of painstaking cutting and measuring to create a huge 24 x 36” linoleum block print, Ginger makes attention to detail her primary concern. When creating an image, she likes to think about the individual portions of the piece and how they relate to the work as a whole, and feels that each and every section of a work should be able to function on its own.

The paper Ginger uses is very important to her work—both in her prints and her origami. She selects a variety of imported and traditional papers (many handmade or hand-printed). This, combined with much of her imagery, indicates a strong Asian influence throughout her portfolio.

Ginger considers her artwork to be an extension of her personality. “Many times, people will view my pieces without having the opportunity to meet the person behind them, so I want to make sure that I am giving them the best impression possible,” she says. The best advice that she can give to other artists is to allow their work to “change and grow” and, by this means, prevent their work from becoming “stagnant.”

Currently working out of the basement studio of her Old Brooklyn home, Ginger is a member of the Berea Fine Arts Club, Origami USA, the Ohio Arts and Crafts Guild, Asociacion Espanola de Papiroflexia (The Spanish Paperfolding Association), and Ohio Designer Craftsmen.
