Biography
Biographical Sketch for Catherine Camden

Born in southern Missouri, I began drawing portraits at the approximate age of 4, as I was required to behave in church and so, upon discovering blank pages in the fronts and backs of hymnals, began my art career drawing the people around me. Having an innate love for people coupled with a positive outlook have been great assets for my ability to portray them. After high school, I attended Drury College and then the University of
Missouri, always pursuing Spanish, music and art. In addition to my art, I am fluent in Spanish, an accomplished musician and a published poet. Later, living in Iowa City with access to the great art community there inspired and influenced me to begin my professional career in art in 1976. Afterward, moving to southeastern Oklahoma, I took advantage of the availability of Native American people as subject matter. I subsequently moved to Santa Fe, NM, operating my own gallery where I sold many originalsand prints. In 1999, I returned to southern Missouri to care for my mother, now 99. In this area of the country, I continue to enjoy many interesting and unique portrait commissions, some as large as 60" high.

In my early years, I worked mainly in pencil, did not try pastels until age 12 and oils at 14. Most of my current commissions are for pastel but I adore working in oil as well. However, I believe the velvety look of pastel is the better interpreter of flesh tones. (Just my opinion). Understanding the make-up of mediums ensures that my finished works are absolutely archival. I have done much life drawing in the past and since most people do not like to sit for portraits, I find this experience serves to enable me to utilize photographs. In portrait work, I like to do a photo study of my subject when possible, and use these for reference. I do not like to use computer-enhanced material as I feel it inhibits the flow of creativity. I have always had the gift of portraying the personality of the subject and for this reason love the more free-handed approach in creating portraits and other works. I continually study the various mediums and grounds in order to choose whatever seems to be the most appropriate for the subject.

I have received many awards for my works, Grand Heritage Award from the Five Civilized Tribes Museum and Best In Show, Trail of Tears Indian Art Competition. My work was chosen for exhibition in the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C. Art of the First Americans Exhibit. Additionally, my work was a part of the“Contemporary Native American Art” exhibit in the Smithsonian. I have had numerous one-woman shows and my work has been a part of many art competitions.

I taught basic drawing as well as beginning pastel for Cedar Rapids Community College and the University of Oklahoma. I have conducted workshops and short courses as well as private lessons. While these activities are enjoyable and edifying, they are also time consuming and I find I would rather be at the easel.

I cordially invite you to visit my website, www.camden-howardartwork.com for a gallery of portraits and other paintings and prints. It is always my great pleasure to create for any client a work of art the family will cherish for generations.
