Biography
UNIQUE TO THE EASTERN CAPE, MANDELAS BIRTHPLACE, LORRAINE (XHOSA GIVEN-NAME THANDOKAZI) STRIVES TO PROMOTE AN AWARENESS OF ANCIENT ARTEFACTS. THROUGH AN EXPLORATION OF IMAGERY, IDEAS AND COLOURS SHE COMMUNICATES HER DREAMS AND BELIEFS, USING THE TRADITIONAL XHOSA CLOTH AS HER CANVAS. TO ALLEVIATE POVERTY THROUGH SELF-EMPLOYMENT, LOCAL RURAL BEADERS CRAFTED BLANKET PINS AND THESE ARE USED AS AN EXTENTION OF HER ARTWORK. SINCE 1999 SHE HAS PRODUCED AND SOLD WORKS BOTH LOCALLY AND OVERSEAS. HER 1ST XHOSA ARTWORK WAS SOLD TO LATE MIN. STEVE TSHWETE. IN 2002 THE PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICA TEAM DISPLAYED HER WORK AT THE GRAHAMSTOWN ARTS FESTIVAL. HER 1ST SOLO EXHIBITION TITLED AFRICAN FORMS WAS HELD IN 2005. IN RECOGNITION OF HER WORK SHE WAS AFFORDED AN AUDIENCE WITH MR. NELSON MANDELA, AND SHE PRESENTED HIM WITH TWO OF HER ARTWORKS. HER VISION AND MISSION FOR 2007 IS TO REPLICATE THE BEAUTY AND SIMPLICITY OF THEIR BEADWORK AND SHOW THEM TO THE WORLD.
