Biography
Sl Thorsen-Painted Bear was recently honored to contribute 3 original works at the request of the Grammy Awards, for the Tribute to Bono, with his pieces being auctioned at $15,000 each along with such other artists as Peter Max.

He was also chosen as the nationally Featured Artist for the Cover of the 2003 Reservation Economic Summit & American Indian Business Trade Fair Business Directory.

Among the Tribal Nations, this is a great honor for SL, known by his Elders as “Painted Bear.” “I am deeply touched and honored to be granted this opportunity by the NCAIED to represent my White Earth RES and the Ojibwa/Chippewa Tribe of my ancestors.”

RES 2003 is the largest American Indian event in the United States and is the premier gathering of American Indian Entrepreneurs & Tribal Representatives.

SL Thorsen, a member of the White Earth Ojibwa (Chippewa) Tribe, was born and raised in Portland, Oregon.

After years of living in New York City and Beverly Hills, and traveling abroad to Europe and a long stay on the island of Santorini, Greece, he has returned home to Portland to live in the “best, little city with a true heartbeat.”

SL is a self-taught artist, having first worked in stone tile design for commercial architecture, until eventually finding his love of canvas and the joy of working with colorful acrylics.

His canvases refuse to settle comfortably into an established category, but most certainly do place him among his postmodern peers. This is evidenced by the recent exhibit collected by the Portland Art Museum under the enthusiastic leadership of Native American Art Curator, Bill Mercer. The exhibit was titled “New Native Art: Beyond Beads and Feathers,” which was hailed in the Oregonian as a “modest milestone that announces the presence of these Native American artists to the public.” SL ‘s work is stylistically and ideologically free to explore the cutting edge of the New Native Artist, while his bold colors and spiritual inspirations are deeply rooted in his Native American heritage.

As corporate buyers and private collectors have embraced his work, a network of opportunities has allowed SL to gain increasing recognition for his great talent with original and commissioned works.

First Thursday ArtWalk, Nirvana, Pearl District, Portland, Oregon. Show ran from October 2002 - March 2003.

The Indigos are also called Lightworkers or Emissaries of Love and they are here to help transform our planet’s energy and mass consciousness to one of LOVE, TOLERANCE, HARMONY, and BALANCE.

“These Indigo paintings are the result of my vision to honor this New Energy and these Lightworkers which our Tribal Nations have held sacred. May we all begin the journey of vibrating at a higher level of love,” states SL Thorsen-Painted Bear.

“As Gandhi said, ‘our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization.’ The end of this millennium now signals a higher consciousness of love and acceptance of all people – something that we could have learned centuries ago from native cultures, if only we hadn’t perceived them as inferior.”
