Biography
Joyce Marcus has painted oils for many years, studying with Eleanor Speiss-Ferris and David Gista. Her work on canvas developed in a highly abstract manner, focusing on compositions that play with the elemental forms of art-line, color, texture, shape and space. Ten years ago, Ms. Marcus began studying figurative sculpture with Sheila Oettinger using the medium of clay. Her work focuses both on a classic realism with emphasis on proportion and anatomy, as well as on the figure as gesture, playing with elements of rhythm, motion and balance. Over time her figurative three-dimensional sculpture and her two-dimensional abstract work have merged. Her early sculptures reveal the individuality, appearance and personality of her models. Some of her more recent work uses the figure as a jumping-off point toward very organic abstraction reflecting her work on canvas while other pieces delve into a realistic interpretation of the human figure with great attention to detail. Working with underglazes, oxides, mason stains and oil paint, Ms. Marcus has perfected a technique that enriches and enhances the wonderfully textured surfaces of the clay. Each human figure is a unique and amazing three-dimensional landscape to which Ms. Marcus brings her singular view of reality or her interpretative journey into abstraction.
