Biography
Graham was born in Kimberley in 1957 and attended Christian Brothers College from Sub A to matric there. After school he was accepted to Wits University to study architecture. This career choice proved very restrictive but did offer Graham the opportunity to study 2 years of The History of Art which was integral to the first 2 years of architecture. Living in Johannesburg also exposed him to the world of advertising, having landed a vacation job at a local ad agency as a designer/commercial artist. This was the beginning of a career in advertising which still forms the greater part of Grahams commercial activity. A compulsory 2 year stint in the army turned out to be time well spent as Graham was appointed the designer/artist for the Danie Theron Combat School Media Centre which was well resourced and under utilised. This gave Graham the opportunity to study the History of Art and the romantic artists daily. With a fascination for Da Vinci and Pietro Annigoni - Graham spent the best part of 18 months trying to learn their techniques by making detailed copies of their sketches, studies and the curious reverse writing that Da Vinci annotated his work with. After the army Graham moved to Durban (which was his dream for most of his childhood) and pursued his career in advertising and in 1984 opened his own advertising agency called Adgraphics. With some excellent anchor clients like Unilever the agency grew steadily until 2006 when Graham sold out to his staff to pursue his other interests and to revisit fine art. Graham now works from his home in Hillcrest KZN and paints, designs, writes and enjoys the opportunity of spending quality time with his wife Debbie and their three sons Ryan (14), Shaun (13) and Ricky (6)
