Biography
I attended Fullerton College, Otis Insitute of Fine Arts and The University of Cal-State at Fullerton USA. I was a curator of contemporary Art for 10 years (curating over 100 exhibitions) and I have had 6 one-man shows. This realistic piece "Blue Iris" is pastel, wax pencil, graphite, and Gesso on Archers Buff paper. It is strongly influenced by nineteenth century Art Nouveau and Japanese block prints. I work in several genres from realistic figurative works to total abstraction. My intellectual focus is on abstract work. I am heavily influenced by the Abstract Expressionists and their break from literal space (Surrealism) into the flat space of the mind-- beyond the limitations of traditional space. I also enjoy painting and drawing literal images like "Blue Iris" and portraiture as well as my abstract work. I had drawn a series of historic western characters for Talei Publishers-- the Earp brothers, Doc Holiday, Johnny Ringo, Nellie Cashman and Wild Bill. All were published. My daughter "Alexandra" picked "Blue Iris" to exhibit. In time I will show my line abstract works. I work in series. My work is consistent and evolves as the series evolves. Abstraction is omission without loss of content. Check me out as I evolve here from literal to abstract.
Sincerely,
Stephen
Stephen J. Sotnick
Movement in painting, originating in New York City in the 1940s. It emphasized spontaneous personal expression, freedom from accepted artistic values, surface qualities of paint, and the act of painting itself. Pollock, de Kooning, Motherwell, and Kline, are important abstract expressionists.
