LUCIAN RICHARDS is a native of California. For many years he worked in various media, including photography, art glass, woodworking, and acrylics. Using various techniques and ideas from his experience, he is now creating "Abstractions in Wood," wall art using various painted wood shapes. Each piece is unique and original in design and color palette.

Inspiration for working in this medium came from the Art Deco Style of the early 20th century, as well as Lucian’s work with flat glass, leaded and copperfoiled stained glass, and photographing nature in its symmetry and color. In creating these wood pieces, that symmetry and color finds an outlet. The idea for a design comes in the process of combining the elements used in the collage. As the parts go together, inspiration for the various color combinations and wood shapes seems to come very naturally.

A word about the photography of the pieces. Most of the work is constructed in a relief format. This relief style does not photograph well, so the pieces appear to look flat, and very two-dimensional. Up close or from a distance, hanging on a wall, the artwork is very striking, and unconventional. They are truly one of a kind, very vibrant pieces of art. Additional photos of any art pieces featured here will be provided upon request.

Lucian lives in Round Rock/Austin, TX, with his wife Melanie, a musician, recently moving to the area after spending more than five years in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he was a member of the Flagstaff Artists’ Coalition and an exhibiting member of the Artists’ Gallery. He has sold artwork throughout the country. As a member of the Sedona Arts Center, he was awarded second prize in the Mixed Media category at the juried 2008 Members’ Show.

He has also been represented by Textures Gallery at ArtSpace, Scottsdale, AZ, and by Joe Wilcox Fine Arts Gallery, Sedona, AZ.
