Biography | |
I am 77, hailing from Salem, Mass, living in New York for about 35 years. I came here in the late fifties, when the Abstract Expressionist movement was in full swing. I had several shows of my paintings in various galleries, and, though I sold my work, I found it necessary to work at various jobs. Special effects for films and television kept me going for about 15 years. Unfortunately I developed a serious asthma condition, probably due to working with chemicals, and was a semi invalid for ten years, and when I had that condition somewhat in control, I was diagnosed with Parkinson disease. That was six or seven years ago. For a long time I had difficulty walking. I would walk a half a block and suddenly lose the impulse to keep going and had to wait until it came back . I used a cane, mainly for balance, because, while standing at the curb, I would tend to fall forward into the street. After trying different medications I started with Sinemet and am doing reasonably well.
I wasnt able to paint for a long time, but Ive been working in collage for a few years now. I have a small area in the shop at my church for doing art work. Most of my materials are what the church throws out in the trashpanels, paper, etc. The collages are 2 dimensional flat pasted paper.
