Biography | |
Malavika Gupta was born in a small town, Bargarh of state Orissa in India. Since India is a country of rich art and culture, even Malavika was not untouched by the different art forms born in her town. Due to studies and family responsibilities, being the eldest among the four brothers and sisters she never got a chance to learn anything. But she was always fascinated and attracted towards the rich heritage and culture and tried to do something or the other based on her own observation. It was only after completing her junior college she got a chance go to Calcutta where she learnt the art of Terracotta clay modeling. Clay modeling is an ancient art that was born during medieval period. For clay modeling she takes earthen pots of different shapes and sizes and puts her imagination in the form of models of various kinds with clay on them. The characters of her models are living beings that are all throughout the earth and beyond earth. She tries to put the reality of life in the form of human shape, birds, divine powers, Gods and Goddess, nature etc. After making models she paints them with colors with few other tactics to make the work water proof and ultraviolet ray proof. Her work always has two perspectives. One the hidden art and second is Physics behind it.
She tries to put her creativity in the all diverse objects as possible. Her art work on mirrors and glasses with clay are new innovation in the world of art which is introduced as a new subject for the art lovers in the School of Fine Arts in India launching from her home town. The clay is made by her own special techniques which take 3-4 days to get ready.
After returning from Calcutta she pursued this art along with her studies. She did her Post Graduation in Computer Application, Masters Degree in Electronics and then went to Pune for Advanced Computing. After completing her studies in Pune she returns her home town where she joined the School of Fine Arts. While doing terracotta modeling she felt incomplete with colors when she used to paint the models and the pots. So she thought of learning the art of drawing and painting.
She started with drawing, learning from how to draw a line and a circle to figures of various kinds. Then she moved to charcoal painting, working both with pencil and powder and then there was no stopping, she moved to water colors, acrylic, oil, stain glass, etc. She painted on handmade paper, Self made canvases, bed covers, pots etc. All her art work is free hand drawing with ever new ideas. For almost two years it was just colors and paintings until she got married in November 2003.
After marriage she came to Delhi where she joined an organization as Senior Software Engineer. She always kept her liking for paintings and pots alive and took out time to work with them whenever possible.
In May 2005 she came to Phoenix, US where she has again moved towards art. Throughout her journey she had the encouragement from her husband who himself is a true lover of nature, beauty and art. Her husband, scientist by nature, once told her You should merge art and science together to make art reach its zenith.
These were the golden words that gave her new idea to blend science and art. She gave a new dimension to her glass paintings. The physics behind her glass painting is the effect it imposes in the mind when viewed. The frequencies emitted from the glass paintings give the mind a state of thoughtlessness and refreshes the imagination which in turn relaxes the nerves and makes a person fresh with eternal happiness.
The basic things she keeps in mind while making any artwork is not only that it looked good and beautiful but also it is artistically correct.
She still considers herself a newbie in the field or art. |
