Description 
Thunderbirds are one of the few cross-cultural elements of Native North American mythology. Thunderbirds are found among the Plains Indians, but also as well, among Pacific Northwest and Northeastern tribes. The legends vary, but all carry a common thread throughout, that the thunderbird is the bringer of storms. In the last few years there have been several reports of sightings of very large birds with wingspans over 20 feet. It has been estimated that a bird of this size would be capable of lifting a young buffalo calf or small child off the ground. Any bird this large would need a large thermal updraft to help hold it aloft in any long flight. There is almost always a large thermal updraft in front of a moving storm. This would of course give the impression that these large birds, Thunderbirds, were bringing the storm with them. Hence the name: THUNDERBIRDS. Native Americans also name moons for each month. The turtle moon is the September moon, and the harbinger of autumn. These two stories merge for me in Thunderbird and the Turtle Moon, as I remember the times I stand in an autumn field and watch an oncoming evening thunderstorm, with heat lightning and crackling energy. This is one of my favorite things to do and I wonder at how the creation, and nature stories of Indians so vividly portray the immense power of our earth and atmosphere.
