Pyrography is an ancient form of art which dates back to cave dwellers. When man took a burning piece of wood from the fire and applied it to a cave wall, that was pyrography.

Today pyrography is a fascinating art form involving the burning of a picture onto wood, gourds, leather and tagua. Millions of tiny strokes are made into the wood with a tiny red hot blade creating an incredibly realistic look of fur and feathers. I have always enjoyed sketching but it felt like it was the preparation for something more. Acrylic paint can be combined with pyrography to create a more colorful variation.

This is fine art in miniature. Most tagua nuts are no larger than 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches. Tagua nut, also known as vegetable ivory is harder than wood. It comes from the rainforests of Central and S. America. Buying tagua helps support the sustainable use of rainforests. I created this piece for my mother. I drilled a hole near the top and added a ring. She will likely use it as a necklace pendant. It is coated with a protective coat of varnish.
