ONE - a sublime vision of peace
What do we need most for a good, a better life? The answer could be extensive. But it could be as simple as that: We need a society, a community based on peace. This could be a community, which acquires power and inspiration from every single member, every individual. A community, which foundation is not levelled uniformity, but amity.
In view of the cultural and political opening of frontiers, it is time to redefine common foundation. The basal needs of humans are independent of religions and systems of government. Security, confidence, understanding and respect, a peaceful surrounding: These are the desires of young and old, rich and poor, here and everywhere. This society does not have to remain an utopian vision.
But peace is an elusive good and an abstract term. In his painting ONE (=Optimistic New Evolution) Dirk Jakobs manages to capture the desire for peace, the vision of society united in harmony. His diptych consists of two beaming yellow panels. Out of the monochrome yellow, two spotless white stains emerge, one the left side of the diptych on top, on the right side on the bottom.
These blots of pure white are radiating and pervading their luminous environment. The special texture of the undiluted paint results from the painting technique Dirk Jakobs applies: He chooses the decalcomania, an impression method popular especially in Surrealism. Through the viscosity of the paint a specific veining of the surface appears, when two canvases with paint are pressed together and then removed. The colour seems to seethe.
Concentrating the view on the abstract white stains, they reveal by and by symbolic meanings. On the left panel: Could this be a bird, a white dove, symbol of freedom and peace, of inspiration? At any time ready to escape, when conditions turn hostile and chilly? How can it be convinced to remain, to stay for good?
On the right panel: Is this the shape of a human being? Is it a gesture of imploration or praising, which lets him spread his arms? Does he stretch the hands after the bird? Is he a representative of the society he lives in?
The decalcomania technique produces mirroring, two panels, two parts of an entity.
Thus the two white spots, bird and man, are akin. They form two similar shapes of the same origin. Fragile creatures both, delicate insinuations of hope.
Man as reflection of the bird: Reflection of a sublime prospect. The society: Reflection of an unaccomplished vision? The painting ONE unites both present and future, reality and vision at the same time.
The vision, the concept is premise to every realisation. Ideas are intangible and inalterable prefigurations of reality. For Plato, the idea of the âÂÂGoodâÂÂ, explained in his book on the ideal state Politeia, would lead mankind to a society of reason and justice. Following his Allegory of the Sun, humans would be able to recognize their being only in the Light of the Good. The eternal sun illuminates the world, makes all things visible. This refulgence leads to comprehension of life; humans are empowered to configure a community based on the vision of the âÂÂGoodâÂÂ. A basic idea, at all times visionary, essential, contemporary and urging.
ONE: Pulsating surface, protuberances in permanent dynamic reaction. Like the sun, glaringly shining and generously spending energy to all creatures on earth. It imbues bird and man, wish and reality and enables all of them, puts them into unexpected action. The painting turns into a sublime symbol of hope and confidence, yet with a notion of doubt. Will mankind be aware of this chance, will it be able to seize it, to keep it? Will all people realise, that they have much more in common with each other than they assume?
The community everybody longs for demands courage. And it requires the commitment to peaceful acquaintance with each other. Let the OPTIMISTIC NEW EVOLUTION begin now. |
