Description
Here, using Charles Bartlett's original oils, etchings, and woodblock prints as inspiration, our artists have presented an homage to this beloved artist and expressed their unique interpretations of his most popular works.

A full-blooded Hawaiian born in 1890, Duke Kahanamoku virtually grew up in the water near his family home in Waikiki. As a young man, his legendary swimming abilities earned him a number of Olympic medals, most notably in Stockholm in 1912. Although he never really worked as a "beach boy", Duke was a familiar figure to those sunning and swimming at Waikiki as he headed to the waves carrying his homemade 16 foot koa surfboard.

His surfing prowess enabled him to introduce the sport to Australia and many other parts of the world. In later years, he served as sheriff of Honolulu. Known as the "ambassador of aloha", Duke was frequently in the company of movie stars and other celebrities. Today, a large statue of Duke stands on the edge of Waikiki Beach.
