Description 
Charman was born in Richmond, on the edge of London in England, and having established a reputation as a painter, he took up a teaching post in the Faculty of Design at Syracuse University in 1923.
Charman also pursued a successful career as a creative artist. In addition to the AWS he was a member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Club, and the Baltimore Watercolor Club where he exhibited regularly. The artist held one-man shows in New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Cleveland, Salt Lake City, Des Moines, Boulder, Oxford Ohio, and Pittsfield Mass.
It has been said of Charman's work 'In many of his paintings he creates a dimensional depth, allowing one to look through the forms to something beyond that is vague and mysterious, and an emotional lift is experienced. Changes in his work are constantly evident - changes which are thoughtful and subtle and keep his paintings moving along serenely'.
