Description
Prizewinning painting of the Auld Kirk in Ayr, Scotland where some of Robert Burns' family, including his father, are buried.

This is the "haunted" graveyard featured in Burn's world reknowned poem "Tam o' Shanter. A Tale" where Tam, riding home from the local Inn on his horse, Meg, comes across a coven of witches and Auld Nick (the devil) himself, whilst taking a shortcut through the graveyard. He is chased by the witches and narrowly escapes capture by galloping across the the bridge, now known as "Tam's Brig". Everyone knows that witches cannot cross running water, but Meg loses her tail as one of the witches makes a grab for it as they bolt for the bridge. A great story from one of the world's greatest poets!
